Rollersports Singapore (RS) is the new name for the Inline Sports and Skating Association of Singapore (InSSAS). InSSAS was formed 17 April 1998.
Short History
- Inline skating is a common sight today in Singapore. It did not used to be that way. In the early 90s, there were few inline skaters in Singapore. Today, Rollersports Singapore estimates that there are more than 30,000 skaters in Singapore.
- In 1997, a small group of inline skaters decided to group together to form InSSAS. The vision for InSSAS was four-fold:
- To encourage and build the sport in its different forms, namely, artistic, hockey, X-Treme, Speed and recreational
- To encourage proper skating and safety through skate schools
- To raise the competence level of competitive skaters in Singapore
- To put Singapore on the International Skating Map InSSAS was formed in April 1998.
- This year, in 2005, with a new Committee onboard, Rollersports Singapore is restructuring. It has exciting plans and works closely with the Singapore Sports Council and third party organisations such as the SE CDC and Mandarin Junior Chamber of Commerce to bring these plans about. The future is bright! Skaters unite!
Priorities Today
- Today in 2005, Rollersports Singapore is being restructured to comply with the Singapore Sports Council requirements of it as the National Sports Association governing and developing the sports in Singapore. Rollersports Singapore can only do that in partnership with members from the skating fraternity, skating clubs and associations, commercial enterprises involved in skating, government organizations and international bodies.
- The key priorities of Rollersports Singapore for 2005/2006 are: - To complete its self-restructuring with a re-naming of the organisation to be RollerSports Singapore
- To implement Singapore National Level Certification for Coaches and Schools
- To identify and develop athletes for national and global competitions
- To work with the Authorities to build world-class skating facilities such as those in Korea or Mexico.
- To commence putting Singapore on the International Skating Map of the World The Future of International Skating and the Olympic Dream
- In 2005, the International Olympic Council which met in Singapore for the first time invited the FIRS (International Roller Sports Federation) to be considered as an Olympic Sports for the Olympics in 2012.
- Sadly for skaters worldwide, the IOC did not accept the FIRS proposal this time. But in the words of the current FIRS President, 'Singapore shall then be seen as a starting point ... all I can say is we won't give up now that the road to the Olympic dream is clear before us.'
